Ohio is set to remove almost 160,000 inactive voter registrations from its voter rolls in preparation for the upcoming presidential election. This includes thousands of registrations in the northwest Ohio region.
As per state and federal laws, it is mandatory for election officials to ensure that voter rolls are accurate. Secretary of State Frank LaRose has recently released a list of names that are about to be removed. If your name is on this list, it is recommended that you get in touch with your board of elections to update your registration and avoid being removed from the voter rolls.
According to LaRose, the registrations can be removed from the list as per the law since the records indicate that the individuals have not been residing or active at their registered address for at least four consecutive years. He emphasized that the county boards of elections have done a thorough job under bipartisan oversight in providing his office with this list.
The individuals who have been added to the list must take necessary measures before Monday to prevent their names from being eliminated from the records.
It is possible for individuals who have had their names removed from the voter registry to re-register at any given time.
If an individual refrains from voting or engaging in any other voter activity, such as signing a candidate petition, for a period of four years or more, they may be added to the list.
If you’re wondering whether simply not voting is enough to have your voter registration canceled, the answer is no. County boards of elections are required to send initial notices in the mail to inactive voters to let them know they’ve been flagged for removal. However, failure to respond to those notices could result in your name being added to the list of voters to be removed from the rolls.
Ohioans who plan to vote in the November 5 General Election need to mark their calendars for the October 7 deadline.
This is the last day for voters to register and be eligible to cast their ballot.
Don’t miss out on your chance to have your voice heard in the upcoming election – make sure you register before the deadline!
