Missouri’s attorney general has vowed to uphold certain abortion restrictions, even as a new constitutional amendment is anticipated to overturn the state’s near-total ban on the procedure.
In response to a request from incoming Governor Mike Kehoe, Attorney General Andrew Bailey stated his office would continue enforcing the ban on abortions after fetal viability.
The amendment includes an exception allowing abortions when a healthcare provider determines it is necessary to protect the life or the physical or mental health of the pregnant individual.
Bailey also confirmed his office would enforce Missouri’s law mandating parental consent for minors seeking abortions.
