New York City, NY – Court documents reveal that Hasem, a 31-year-old suspect, has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder following the death of 56-year-old Marya in an unprovoked attack. Prosecutors allege that the social worker was assaulted by the younger man, who hit her multiple times before pursuing her into a nearby apartment.
Once inside, he continued the assault, kicking and stomping her to death. The investigation began in May after a 911 call reported the assault. When officers arrived, they found Marya unresponsive. She was rushed to the hospital and passed away a month later. The medical examiner reported that she had multiple facial fractures and a brain bleed.
Initially charged with attempted murder and assault, the suspect’s charges were upgraded this week. Court documents indicate he now faces charges of murder with intent and murder committed during another felony. When police arrived, the man allegedly yelled at Marya and falsely accused her of trying to stab him, according to court records.
The suspect’s attorney claims that his client will present a detailed alibi, asserting that he was not at the scene of the attack. Held without bail, the suspect is scheduled for a preliminary conference on August 6.
