A 44-year-old Houston man was detained on Tuesday after deputies uncovered a substantial quantity of illegal substances in his vehicle during a traffic stop, according to the Nacogdoches County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies stopped Donte Demond Brown at a gas station in the 3500 block of South Street after noticing him racing through a construction zone on US 59 South. When deputies approached Brown, they recognized the odor of marijuana. Brown denied using drugs, but a check of his vehicle discovered drug paraphernalia and pills identified as ecstasy, according to the sheriff’s office.
Further examination revealed that there was more ecstasy in the trunk, totaling 17.36 pounds in 38 containers. Deputies also discovered 12 bags of methamphetamine weighing more than 11.2 ounces and one bag of cocaine weighing 1.11 pounds. Deputies charged Brown with three first-degree felonies for possessing a controlled substance, despite their inability to confirm his recent drug use. Each crime carries a maximum jail sentence of five to 99 years and a $10,000 fine. Brown’s bonds were set at $80,000 per charge, for a total of $240,000.
