According to Megan Pofferbarger, the intake coordinator at Animal Friends Humane Society, shelters experience a surge in intake ranging from 30 to 60% during the Fourth of July weekend.
According to her, Animal Friends was almost at full capacity earlier this week. However, since July 3, they have taken in 15 dogs and now have reached their maximum capacity.
As per Pofferbarger, they are currently establishing temporary kennels and getting ready for an influx of more animals, since the Fourth of July festivities are still ongoing throughout the weekend.
According to Poffenbarger, the shelter in Ohio must abide by a three-day stray hold policy before they can proceed with adopting out your dog.
If your furry friend happens to escape, it’s crucial to immediately check shelters.
Poffenbarger emphasizes the urgency of the situation, stating that although three days may seem like a sufficient amount of time, it actually moves quickly. Therefore, he advises pet owners to visit their local county shelter as soon as possible to search for their lost dog. It is recommended that they visit the shelter every day and search for their dog themselves, as it is not feasible to call and inquire about their dog’s presence in a facility that houses over 100 dogs. After all, the owner knows their dog best and can identify their pet more accurately.
