ALBANY, NY – Advocates and lawmakers are urging the Governor to sign a bill that would assist New Yorkers with their prescription and utility bills.
“With these extreme weather patterns affecting everyone, the most severe consequences fall on seniors and those with underlying health issues,” said Assembly Member Pat Fahy (D-Assembly District 109).
If enacted, the legislation would link New Yorkers enrolled in the state’s Elderly Pharmaceutical Insurance Coverage Program (EPIC) with the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP).
Emma Geneva Conway, an AARP advocate and Albany resident, believes this connection would help New Yorkers access necessary benefits. She also points out that it could help reduce the stigma associated with receiving financial assistance.
“Many of my friends, family, and fellow church members in Albany are too proud to ask for what they see as a handout,” said Geneva Conway.
When New Yorkers utilize state assistance programs, it often opens doors to additional support through other channels.
For example, many can qualify for extended discounts through National Grid and other utility companies once they are enrolled in the state’s Home Energy Assistance Program.
“Every step along the way saves money and alleviates the financial stress that older adults and low-to-moderate income individuals experience daily,” said Laurie Wheelock, executive director of the Public Utility Law Project.
This bill is among many awaiting Governor Hochul’s approval.
Some lawmakers noted that the Governor has about 500 bills left to sign before the new session year, but they remain hopeful that this bill will be among them.
