While Caitlin Clark is making headlines as a rookie in the WNBA, her fellow Iowa Hawkeyes teammate Kate Martin is also making a name for herself. Despite being a second round pick in a league with limited roster spots, Martin has become a valuable contributor for the Las Vegas Aces. However, her popularity extends beyond her on-court performance, as she has also won over the Aces’ fans with her easy-going personality and ability to fit seamlessly into the team dynamic.
On Tuesday night, the Aces showed their love for Martin when he fell to the floor with what appeared to be a leg injury early in the game. The entire team quickly surrounded him, providing towels to shield him from the cameras and offering their support during the scary moment. It was evident that Martin’s teammates deeply cared for him.
Following the game, A’ja Wilson, the WNBA MVP and current top player globally, emphasized the significance of the team’s solidarity with Martin. Her heartwarming words displayed the support the Aces have for Martin and the exceptional culture established in Las Vegas.
Wilson expressed his dedication to looking after his rookie, stating that she is a valued member of their team and someone they can always rely on. He referred to her as their sister, emphasizing the strong bond they share and the importance of supporting each other.
According to Wilson, the team’s decision to safeguard Martin was driven by a desire to ensure her well-being, despite being unsure of the extent of her injuries since they were caused by a mostly non-contact incident.
“We made it our priority to safeguard her peace, mental well-being, and emotional state,” she emphasized. “While we understand that cameras are there to capture the moment, it became clear to us that we needed to do everything in our power to protect her from potential harm that could come from the internet or individuals. Privacy is important to us, and we will go to great lengths to ensure that she is safe and secure.”
Fortunately, Martin managed to come back to the bench wearing sweatpants during the latter part of the game. However, there are no updates yet regarding the extent of their injury.
