OKLAHOMA CITY — A mother was arrested for allegedly trying to leave her child at a gas station while intoxicated.
Court documents reveal that witnesses saw the mother, Amber Adams, grab her child by the arm and throw him to the ground at a gas station near W Memorial Road and N Macarthur Boulevard.
Neighbors expressed their reactions after learning the 27-year-old was arrested on Saturday for child neglect.
“It hurts my heart,” said Tremayne Smith, a local resident.
Witnesses reported that Adams appeared heavily intoxicated at the gas pump when she abandoned her 11-month-old child and attempted to drive away.
Police were called, and another person in the car stopped Adams and retrieved the child before driving off. Officers later caught up with them. Adams admitted to consuming wine, tequila, and drugs before getting behind the wheel. She also gave conflicting explanations for trying to leave her child behind.
Smith, who often saw Adams and her children playing at the local playground, expressed his shock.
“They’re always happy kids playing out there,” Smith said. “They all get along around here.”
He added that he hopes Adams and her children get the support they need.
“It’s heartbreaking. I want the best for the kids, always. Everyone has their struggles, but I want no pain or hurt for the children,” he said.
There was also a 4-month-old child in the vehicle at the time.
Additionally, authorities discovered that Adams is currently on probation in Florida for a previous child neglect case.
