A late-season snow system is predicted to produce substantial snowfall in sections of western Massachusetts and eastern New York starting at midnight Friday and lasting until 2 p.m. on Saturday.
The National Weather Service in Albany has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Berkshire County, Massachusetts, and western Greene and Ulster counties, New York. The advisory predicts total snow accumulations of 2 to 4 inches, with higher altitudes above 2,000 feet in the eastern Catskills potentially receiving up to 6 inches. Some sleet may mix in over the Berkshires, temporarily affecting accumulation rates.
Snowfall rates might approach an inch per hour in the late morning on Saturday, with travel conditions deteriorating owing to snow-covered and slippery roads, particularly on untreated or freezing surfaces.
Residents of North Adams, Pittsfield, Hunter, Woodstock, and the surrounding towns should drive with caution and allow for extra travel time. Local officials advise drivers to reduce their speed and provide plenty of space between vehicles.
This storm system is unusual for mid-April and serves as a reminder that winter weather can persist in the area. Drivers are advised to watch local advisories and be prepared for changeable weather until lunchtime Saturday.
