Victims identified in fatal accident at intersection of Powers and Fountain

The identities of the victims in the tragic collision that occurred on the morning of June 16, 2024, at the intersection of Powers Boulevard and Fountain Boulevard have been released by the El Paso County Coroner’s office. The two victims were identified as Emily Hoffman, 51, and Olga Guavala, 72.

At noon on June 16, Colorado Springs Police received a report about a three-car crash that occurred at the intersection of South Powers Boulevard and East Fountain Boulevard. Officers were immediately dispatched to the scene.

CSPD’s investigation found that the initial car was heading southbound on Powers Boulevard and ran a red light, resulting in a collision with a second car. The collision was so intense that the second car hit a third car, causing it to flip onto its passenger side. Tragically, the second car’s driver, Guavala, and the third car’s passenger, Hoffman, lost their lives at the scene. The first car’s driver suffered severe injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment.

According to Colorado Springs Police, 40-year-old Shawn Johnston has been identified as the driver of the first car involved in the incident. He has been arrested and charged with two counts of vehicular homicide, driving under the influence, and other traffic charges.

According to CSPD, Colorado Springs has seen its 28th and 29th traffic fatalities this year. Comparatively, at the same time last year, the number stood at 22. Shockingly, over the last year, the city has witnessed a staggering 57 traffic fatalities.
