Vice President-elect J.D. Vance delivered a sharp warning to Democrats on Thursday following the collapse of the GOP-led House funding bill: “Be careful what you wish for.”
The bill fell far short of the required 290 votes, managing only 174 in favor, with 38 Republicans opposing it. This failure sets the stage for a federal government shutdown at midnight on Friday.
Vance accused Democrats of orchestrating the shutdown to undermine President-elect Donald Trump’s leverage when he assumes office next year. “The Democrats just voted to shut down the government even though we had a clean [continuing resolution], because they didn’t want to give the president negotiating leverage during his first year of his new term,” Vance stated, according to CNN. “And No. 2, because they would rather shut down the government and fight for global censorship bulls—. They’ve asked for a shutdown, and I think that’s exactly what they’re going to get.”
A potential shutdown would have significant consequences for millions of federal workers nationwide. Approximately 2.2 million civilian federal employees could face furloughs or be required to work without pay during the holiday season. Additionally, another 2 million military personnel risk delayed paychecks.
