In the early hours of Tuesday, June 25, 2024, LaShanda Shumpert, a cherished mother of six and grandmother to 18 children, lost her life in a senseless shooting that took place at her home.
As Shumpert, 47, conversed with her daughter over the phone, tragedy struck in a Milwaukee neighborhood as she was fatally shot at her doorstep.
It has been reported that during the shooting, some of her grandchildren were present inside the house but fortunately, they were not harmed.
Maeleen Dilworth-Jordan, the mother of Shumpert, expressed her immense sorrow as she shared the heart-wrenching moment she received a call from her granddaughter.
“My granddaughter called me at 3:00 this morning, screaming and all. And I could understand what she was saying. … ‘Somebody shot my mom,’” she told WISN 12 News..
The shooting incident is still surrounded by uncertainty as detectives commence their investigation into the matter. Dilworth-Jordan provided an account of the events that preceded her daughter’s death, saying:
“To my knowledge, she was on the porch. Somebody knocked at the door. I think she opened the door and got shot. And we have no idea. You know, she’s a mom. She’s a grandmother. She doesn’t go nowhere, she doesn’t bother anybody. So we don’t know.”
At approximately 3:30 a.m., emergency responders rushed to the location and made attempts to save Shumpert’s life, but unfortunately, their efforts were unsuccessful.
The father of the victim, Waymon Shumpert, has fond memories of his daughter and her lively personality.
“Oh, she was fun,” he shared with the TV station. “She could sing. She was a fun daughter. She was my oldest baby. She was really fun.”
