A Cypress man is in trouble with the law after he refused to stop for a routine traffic stop, evaded deputies during a short chase, and ultimately barricaded himself inside his residence for a significant period of time.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office reported that the incident unfolded when deputies from Harris County Constable Precinct 5 tried to pull over the individual on Tuckerton Road. The reason for the attempted stop was the alleged speeding near an elementary school.
The man ignored the deputies’ command to stop and kept driving until he reached a house in the 19100 block of Goodnight Peak Trail Drive, according to investigators.
According to HCSO Lt. Brian Buccini, the suspect fled the scene, exited the vehicle, entered the house, retrieved a firearm, and proceeded to point it at the deputies.
According to Buccini, the deputies took cover out of fear for their lives, while the suspect quickly retreated back into the house.
A four-hour standoff ensued once they were back inside, with negotiators attempting to coax the man out.
Later in the day, the wife clarified that her husband, a former marine, would not come out without a warrant.
“He gets triggered really easily,” said his wife, who preferred not to share her name. “Whenever they stop him, he immediately starts thinking that they’re going to arrest or even kill him, so he feels the need to run back home. He doesn’t want to come out unless they have a warrant. If they do, then he’ll willingly walk out and speak to law enforcement. But without a warrant, he’s not going to come out and engage in a conversation with them.”
The standoff came to an end thanks to a text message containing the image, once the warrant paperwork was issued.
Officials called for backup as the man stayed inside. ABC13’s SkyEye surveyed the area from above, revealing additional police cars and a Harris County SWAT truck at the scene.
The officials provided limited information about the duration of the man’s presence, but they did confirm that he was taken into custody.
According to Buccini, “Once we obtained the warrant and sent it to our negotiators, they electronically forwarded it to the suspect. Surprisingly, he surrendered without any complications.”
The investigators gathered evidence from both the home and car, while the man’s wife adamantly claimed that her husband had merely driven back home.
“He didn’t commit any wrongdoing, so they can charge him with whatever they want. However, he didn’t harm anyone, damage any property, or engage in any criminal activity. It’s just a simple traffic ticket,” she explained.
Officials said that he is currently facing multiple felony charges.
During the standoff, the man’s wife and two young children were present at home, but thankfully, none of them sustained any injuries.
