This lesser-known 26-mile train ride passes through some of Colorado’s most stunning sites

If you’re a train enthusiast, the Colorado Springs region is the place to be. While the Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway is well-known for its breathtaking ride to the 14,115-foot-tall Pikes Peak, and the Cripple Cripple Creek & Victor Narrow Gauge Railroad is popular among visitors for its steam engine that takes them back in time to the mining days, there’s an underrated rail experience that you don’t want to miss – The Royal Gorge Route Railroad.

The historic railway, located in Canon City, offers visitors a unique tourism experience that takes them back in time to the 19th century. Dating back to 1879, the railway has been restored to its former glory, giving visitors a taste of life on the rails during that era. It’s conveniently located just an hour’s drive from Colorado Springs or two hours from Denver, making it a must-see attraction for history buffs and train enthusiasts alike.

As the journey starts from the Santa Fe Depot, the train follows the path of the Arkansas River and covers a 24-mile round-trip route that passes through stunning granite cliffs. These cliffs are known to tower over the train, with some reaching a height of more than 1,000 feet.

The Royal Gorge Route Railroad provides different options for passengers to enjoy the rail experience. You can choose from coach, deluxe, and vista dome seating, with up to four daily departures during peak season at 9 a.m, 12:30 p.m., 3:30 p.m., and 6:30 p.m. The on-board 403 Grill offers food options from its menu for all passengers. For a more luxurious experience, the railroad also offers first-class lunch and dinner services that include multi-course meals served during the ride.

If you’re a train enthusiast, you have the option to experience the Ride with the Engineer. This provides the unique opportunity to take a peek inside the Engineer cab for around 12 miles of the trip. For those who want to add some excitement to their journey, you can join in on the Murder Mystery Dinner Train on select Saturday nights this summer.

The train ride at this destination offers a variety of seasonal events, including celebrations for Mother’s Day and Oktoberfest. However, the most popular time of the year is during the holidays when the Santa Express Train takes visitors on a magical journey through a winter wonderland. A beautifully crafted locomotive, adorned with festive decorations created from 5,000 hours of craftsmanship, leads guests of all ages on this enchanting adventure.
