Texas Republican Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick made an exciting announcement this week regarding a significant legislative initiative for the Texas Senate. Introducing the Dementia Prevention Research Institute of Texas, Patrick aims to address the pressing issue of dementia in the state.
Reflecting on the achievement of the Cancer Prevention Research Institute of Texas, Patrick is optimistic about replicating the same level of success with DPRIT.
“Today, we are excited to introduce a groundbreaking research initiative called DPRIT. Similar to the successful CPRIT program, DPRIT will be dedicated to tackling the complex issue of dementia. Just as CPRIT has made remarkable strides in cancer research, DPRIT aims to make significant advancements in understanding and combating dementia.”
Dementia encompasses a range of conditions that impact essential cognitive functions like thinking, behavior, and memory. Alzheimer’s disease is often linked to dementia because it produces comparable effects on individuals.
Patrick expressed his deep concern for dementia, describing it as a heart-wrenching and destructive illness. He emphasized the importance of Texas taking the lead in the fight against dementia, not only in terms of research but also in finding effective treatments and ultimately discovering a cure.
The DPRIT needs to go through the approval process in the Texas legislature and then gain the support of Texas voters as a constitutional amendment. The upcoming legislative session is scheduled to commence in January 2025.
