According to Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-Texas), President-elect Trump’s tariffs will effectively compel Mexico to engage in discussions aimed at resolving immigration and fentanyl issues.
NewsNation’s Blake Burman recently interviewed Cuellar from “The Hill” and asked him if he would support a 25 percent tariff if it meant potentially resolving the border issue.
Cuellar responded confidently, “Laredo is the largest port, responsible for handling 40 percent of all trade between the U.S. and Mexico. I understand that this is a strategic move to gain negotiation leverage, and I am confident that Mexico will be willing to come to the table.”
President Trump expressed his concerns about the potential consequences of imposing a 25 percent tariff on Mexican goods. He emphasized the undesirability of such a tariff and acknowledged that Mexico may retaliate in a similar manner. The President expressed his desire to avoid a situation where both countries engage in a tariff battle. However, he believed that the threat of tariffs would compel Mexico to come to the negotiation table, allowing for a resolution on issues related to immigration and the distribution of fentanyl.
In a recent announcement, President Trump revealed his plans to implement a new executive order imposing tariffs on goods from China, Canada, and Mexico at the beginning of his next term.
In his recent posts on Truth Social, the president-elect announced his plans to implement a 25 percent tariff on goods from Canada and Mexico. Additionally, he intends to impose an additional 10 percent tariff on Chinese goods. Trump’s objective with these tariffs is to exert pressure on these countries to enhance their border security measures and combat the export of fentanyl to the United States.
In a recent post on Truth Social, former President Donald Trump expressed his strong belief that both Mexico and Canada have the ability to effectively address a long-standing issue. He asserted that they possess the absolute right and authority to resolve this matter swiftly. Trump further demanded that they exercise this power and warned that failing to do so would come with significant consequences. He emphasized that it was time for these countries to bear a substantial cost until they take action.
Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) expressed his criticism towards President Trump’s tariff threats on Tuesday, stating his belief that the president-elect has not adequately considered the practical consequences.
“I believe he is leading us towards a truly frightening situation, where the outcomes cannot align with the commitments he made,” Blumenthal stated during an interview on CNN. “One example is cutting government expenditures while simultaneously safeguarding Medicare and Medicaid.”
