A recent survey has revealed that there has been a significant increase in gun ownership among Republican women in recent years.
Gallup’s annual measurement on gun ownership in the United States reveals a significant increase in the percentage of Republican women who own guns. In the period of 2007-2012, the ownership rate stood at 19 percent, but in the more recent years of 2019-24, it has risen to 33 percent. This data highlights a notable shift in gun ownership among Republican women over time.
During that period, the rate has also decreased among men who identify as Democrats and men who identify as independents.
Among Democratic men, the rate has dropped by 7 percentage points, now standing at 29 percent. Similarly, independent men have seen a decrease of 5 percentage points, with the rate now at 39 percent.
According to Gallup, Republican men continue to lead the nation in gun ownership among different demographics based on gender and party affiliation. The study reveals that 60 percent of Republican men claim ownership of firearms.
The rate among independent women increased by 2 percentage points, while it decreased by 1 percentage point among Democratic women.
According to Gallup, it started collecting data in 2007 and published its findings in 2013. The analysis shows that the trends have remained consistent since then, highlighting the significant difference in gun ownership rates between genders, despite an increase in women purchasing firearms.
More women are purchasing guns now compared to previous years, but there is a wider gap between political parties when it comes to gun ownership. This can be attributed to the increasing politicization of guns, both in domestic settings and on the campaign trail.
In 2007-12, there was a 16-point difference in personal gun ownership rates between Republicans and Democrats. However, today, that gap has widened to 28 points.
In the latest survey, it was found that approximately 50 percent of individuals living in rural areas own a firearm, while only 20 percent of urban residents reported gun ownership.
According to Gallup, 31 percent of U.S. adults personally own a gun, while 13 percent state that there is a gun in their household belonging to someone else.
The survey findings represent a compilation of data gathered from 2019 to 2024, encompassing random samples of approximately 1,000 adults. With a combined sample size of 6,425 adults, the margin of error is 1 percentage point.
