A shooting incident outside a gas station on Indy’s near east side has resulted in the death of a man.
At the intersection of 10th and Rural, a man was shot in an ambush outside the Marathon gas station around 4:30 in the morning.
The hospital couldn’t save the victim, who passed away shortly after being rushed in.
A video recorded the shooting incident.
The victim was specifically targeted by the hooded gunman, as revealed by surveillance footage from the business. After the attack, the culprit quickly fled the scene.
Officer Tommy Thomson of IMPD has appealed to the community to assist the detectives in any way possible to aid the victim’s family. Any information that can be provided would be greatly appreciated.
The police are currently unaware of the motive behind the murder as there was no altercation or dispute witnessed outside the establishment prior to the incident.
The IMPD is fully aware that the 10th and Rural area has a long-standing reputation as one of the high crime neighborhoods in Indianapolis.
Thompson stated that IMPD has taken a proactive approach by self-dispatching into the area throughout the day to demonstrate a police presence and discourage criminal activity.
Pastor Fredick Boyd Jr. expressed his disappointment at the loss of life, stating “It’s very disappointing as always.”
Every week, Pastor Boyd and other faith leaders in the area gather at Zion Unity Baptist Church to deliberate on strategies to curb violence in the near east side.
According to Boyd, achieving that goal would entail more active participation from the community.
Boyd urged, “Join us in dispelling darkness with light. The near east side has been plagued by violence for too long, but we can put an end to it.”
In July 2021, the Marathon gas station experienced its most recent homicide prior to this incident.
Thanks to surveillance video, authorities were able to solve a crime and convict a man for murder.
Community leaders maintain that while some of the neighbors may view the business as a nuisance, the owners have been responsive to their concerns regarding litter, loitering, and graffiti.
As of now, the authorities have not made any arrests in the case during the night.
