The United States experienced a series of seven earthquakes on the same day.
In recent weeks, several earthquakes have shaken the U.S., with California facing a large one that triggered a tsunami warning last week and Alaska experiencing one over the weekend. This time, multiple states across the country were hit by a series of earthquakes on the same day.
The Mid-South, including Tennessee, Arkansas, Missouri, and Kentucky, experienced seven earthquakes within a single day. Thankfully, all were relatively minor, with the strongest measuring around a 3.0 on the Richter scale. However, it’s still a surprising event.
“This is normal seismicity,” said Dr. Kent Moran from the University of Memphis Center for Earthquake Research and Information. “It just comes in bursts on occasion.”
He continued, “We (are) here at the Earthquake Center to help educate the public and emergency services on how to be prepared for such events, big or small.”
Earlier this year, a significant earthquake struck New York City, causing panic among residents. Now, several months later, the Mid-South has been hit with seven earthquakes in a single day.
According to the report:
Seven earthquakes rattled the area within a nine-hour window.
“We’ve seen over the past few days; one was a magnitude seven off the coast of Oregon and California,” Dr. Moran said. “We’ve had a series of smaller quakes here, with magnitudes below two, and the largest being a magnitude three.”
Memphis, located near the New Madrid Fault Line, is part of a region that spans Missouri, Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Illinois.
The earthquakes reportedly originated from the New Madrid Fault Line area in Missouri.
