Settlement awarded to Missouri family after son’s death

The family of the victim killed in Missouri is finally speaking out, just a little over a week after a civil jury granted what could be the most significant triumph against a Missouri law enforcement officer. The incident took place in Kansas City.

According to the Cates family attorney, Chad Gardner, the officer in question disregarded several safety regulations, as well as his training and orders on that day.

The victims collectively received $10 million as compensation. However, the amount of money awarded cannot fill the void left by the loss of the father’s life.

As you watch the Ring doorbell video of the tragic incident, you are able to both see and hear the devastating moment when Tyler Naudet, a deputy of Jackson County Sheriff, shoots and kills Allen Cates.

Groves expressed her initial thoughts of possibly forgiving the person in question. However, upon being in their presence and observing their nonchalant attitude towards their actions, she realized that she cannot be the sole judge. She believes that ultimately, the individual will have to answer to a higher power and that should be their main concern. “He’s going to have to face our maker one day and that’s who he should be afraid of,” Groves stated.

In the summer of 2019, the Independence police conducted a sting operation on Cates, who had several felony warrants. Despite being recognized as a non-violent offender by the police, he was still targeted by the operation.

Multiple independent police officers testified that Naudet, the only law enforcement officer who fired his weapon, broke the perimeter and acted contrary to his assigned duties.

Described as a flagrant act, Chad Gardner – a former police officer and the lawyer representing the Cates family – denounces the behavior.

According to Gardner, policing is a profession that requires professionals to uphold certain standards, and when there is a significant deviation from those standards, it is necessary to enforce consequences and implement changes.

The woman who was a passenger in the car also suffered injuries and was wounded. As per the ruling of a civil jury, she was granted a compensation of $3 million, while Allen Cates’ two sons were awarded $7 million.

Groves expressed her heartfelt condolences, recognizing the magnitude of the loss for the family. “It’s a huge loss for them,” she stated. “I believe every boy needs their father, and at some point, there’s only so much a mom can do and teach.”

Sheriff Darryl Forte provided a statement to FOX4 when asked for comment regarding the matter by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.

“We have conducted a thorough investigation into the incident and have followed all necessary legal procedures. Deputy Naudet is still employed with us. However, as there is ongoing litigation, I am unable to provide any further comments. Thank you for your understanding.”

It is anticipated that this case will undergo an appeal process, which makes it uncertain as to when the family can finally start their healing journey.
