A severe cold wave is set to hit Saudi Arabia this weekend, with the National Centre for Meteorology (NCM) forecasting temperatures as low as -3°C in certain regions. The cold front, expected to last from Sunday, December 15, to Tuesday, December 17, will impact much of the country, including northern and central areas.
Northern and central regions to face the worst of it
Hussain Al Qahtani, spokesperson for the NCM, explained that the cold air mass will primarily affect areas like Tabuk, Al Jawf, Northern Borders, Hail, and the northern parts of the Eastern Province. Temperatures in these regions are expected to range from 0°C to -3°C during the cold snap.
Strong winds and dust storms to follow the cold front
Along with the frigid temperatures, the cold front will bring strong winds and widespread dust storms. Mecca and Medina, including their coastal regions, are expected to experience reduced visibility due to dust, especially on Sunday and Monday.
Cold wave to spread southward
By Monday and Tuesday, the cold weather will extend south, reaching areas like Al Qassim, Riyadh, and the southern parts of the Eastern Province. Temperatures in these regions are forecast to range from 2°C to 5°C. Dusty conditions and strong winds will continue, intensifying the effects of the cold wave.
Public urged to take precautions
Authorities are advising residents to stay informed with regular weather updates and take necessary precautions against the extreme weather. The NCM has urged people to limit outdoor activities during peak dust storm conditions and to dress warmly to protect against the cold.
As the Kingdom prepares for this unusual weather event, residents are reminded to remain vigilant, particularly in areas most affected by the cold wave and dust storms.
