In Texas, a young 18-year-old mother was arrested for throwing her newborn baby into a trash bag and discarding it in a dumpster. According to police reports, she confessed that she felt compelled to do it, fearing that her boyfriend would leave her if she did not comply. Everilda Cux-Ajtzalam was apprehended on Thursday and charged with one count of abandoning a child without any intention of returning, as per court records examined by Law&Crime.
As the day progressed, a passerby near the dumpster was startled by the sound of a newborn crying and immediately dialed 911. Responding to the call, officers from the Houston Police Department and emergency medical personnel swiftly arrived at the scene around 1:15 p.m. With their combined efforts, the team successfully retrieved the infant from inside the dumpster.
The Houston Fire Department’s medics swiftly transported the victim to Texas Children’s Hospital where the child received effective treatment. Thankfully, the authorities reported that the child’s condition is stable and he is doing well. Following the treatment, Child Protective Services took custody of the child.
According to a recent report from the Houston Chronicle, Cux-Ajtzalam, a Guatemalan national, appeared in court for the first time on Friday. During the hearing, Harris County District Court Judge Veronica M. Nelson reprimanded her for abandoning her son in a pile of garbage and leaving him to die.
According to reports, Nelson remarked that the child’s discovery and subsequent care were solely due to good fortune. He further noted that as the incident took place during the scorching summer of Houston, Texas, and the child was in grave danger at the time, he has decided to set the bail for this case at $90,000.
According to records, the prosecution requested a bond of $150,000 while Cux-Ajtzalam’s public defender asked for a bond of $7,500.
According to records, Cux-Ajtzalam’s bond was set at $90,000, but her release has been put on hold by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). She is presently being held in detention at Harris County Jail, and her court appearance is scheduled for Monday.
