POLICE: Man wanted out of DeKalb County was shot and killed by an FWPD officer Tuesday

An investigation is currently being conducted by the Fort Wayne Police Department (FWPD) following the fatal shooting of a wanted man on Tuesday morning at the Purdue Fort Wayne (PFW) campus. According to FWPD, an external investigation is underway.

According to FWPD Chief Scott Caudill, at around 7:17 a.m., his department received a request from the DeKalb County Community Corrections office for assistance in locating a man who failed to return to their custody.

According to Caudill, they received a notification about five minutes later indicating that the suspect could be carrying a handgun at a Fort Wayne apartment complex. The FWPD officers were then informed that the individual might have made his way to the PFW campus and was spotted around Kettler Circle and Campus Drive. The police approached the man, but he failed to respond to their commands.

According to Caudill, officers were notified by dispatchers that the suspect was armed. In response, FWPD requested emergency backup.

During an interview with 21Alive News, Caudill reported that officers had notified dispatch at 7:48 a.m. that the subject had been struck by gunfire.

According to Caudill, the suspect was given medical attention by the officers present at the location until the arrival of paramedics, who ultimately declared him deceased. The incident did not result in any other reported injuries.

Indiana State Police, the PFW Police Department, the Allen County Coroner’s Office, and the Allen County Prosecutor’s Office are conducting a parallel independent investigation into the shooting, which is still being investigated by FWPD.

At approximately 9 a.m., the university issued an alert notifying that the campus, including IU Fort Wayne, will remain closed for the rest of the day.

Because of an ongoing Fort Wayne Police Department investigation on the west side of campus between Kettler Hall and the river, the campus of Purdue University Fort Wayne (including Indiana University Fort Wayne) will be closed for the remainder of the day Tuesday, July 30.There is no active threat and the incident, which started off campus, involved no one affiliated with either PFW or IUFW.All nonessential employees are expected to work remotely, and all online meetings should continue, as scheduled.
