In Washington, D.C., authorities are still on the hunt for the driver responsible for a fatal hit-and-run incident that resulted in the death of a man who was dragged through a parking lot. The police are actively investigating the matter to bring justice to the victim and his family.
Police have identified the victim of the fatal incident that occurred on Wednesday just after noon as Alton Kelly, a 62-year-old resident of Southeast D.C. Reportedly, the incident occurred on the 2800 block of Alabama Avenue SE, where a white Ford Taurus was traveling in an easterly direction and crossing Naylor Road.
Police have stated that the wife of the individual involved in the incident, whose identity has not been disclosed, has been transported to the hospital. Although her injuries are serious, they are not believed to be life-threatening.
While working with a construction company on Denver Street, Victor Sanchez heard a noise which he initially mistook for the sound of a car hitting a traffic cone. The company had been working on the street for approximately a week.
Sanchez exclaimed, “Stop! Don’t leave. Stop, stop!” as soon as she saw the vehicle. However, the driver did not stop despite her repeated requests.
During a telephone interview with FOX 5 on Thursday, Alva Kelly, the twin sister of Kelly, revealed that her brother had lost his eyesight approximately 15 years ago. This was due to a medication complication that arose from prescribed medication for conjunctivitis. Alva Kelly currently resides in North Carolina.
“She expressed her deep sorrow by saying, ‘At the moment, I’m shattered. Losing his eyesight and getting hit by a car were two of his biggest fears, and to know that he passed away in this way is just too heartbreaking.'”
According to her, despite facing medical complications, her brother was a diligent and hardworking individual who never gave up. She stated that he continued working for as long as he possibly could, showing a strong commitment and dedication to his job.
According to her, he was a beloved individual who had a deep love for the Lord. He prioritized his family, especially his children, and was an exceptional father, husband, and brother. “We all cherished him,” she expressed.
On Thursday, the remnants of the hit-and-run were still visible on the 2900 block of Denver Street, where Jestine McCall resides. When asked about the incident, McCall expressed her concern and pointed out that it was a clear indication of a dangerous lack of regard for human life.
McCall expressed that the lack of surprise from him regarding the makeshift memorials in neighborhoods due to accidents or crimes was due to the prevalence of such occurrences. He noted that one could easily spot balloons, teddy bears, and flowers sitting out in these areas as a tribute to someone who has been hurt or damaged by a vehicle. McCall also mentioned the sad reality of gunshot fires and other violent incidents that lead to such memorials, which he finds appalling.
For approximately seven years, she has been residing on Denver Street and has noticed that drivers frequently disregard traffic regulations and speed limits designated for the area.
“She said she could hear all the commotion outside, with cars speeding down the street. It seemed like a joke to them,” she explained, frustration in her voice. “This needs to stop. Just because someone might not have a lot of money, it doesn’t give anyone the right to act like this.”
“They have no code of ethics that they adhere to. They lack basic moral values and disregard human life without a second thought. It’s as if they simply do not care.”
Alva shared that Kelly’s family is coming together to provide support for one another during this time of unexpected loss.
The driver who took away our brother, a father, and a husband, must come forward and take responsibility for their actions. It is a plea to anyone with a conscience or a heart to turn themselves in. We seek justice for our loved one, and while we must look towards the Lord for forgiveness, the responsible party must come forward and face the consequences of their actions.
