A “disagreement” at an Iowa bar led to the fatal shooting of a 19-year-old in the face, according to authorities.
Taylor County Sheriff’s deputies responded around 3:30 a.m. on July 4 to reports of a shooting at Bootleggers Bar and Grill in Clearfield, as stated in a probable cause affidavit.
Upon arrival, authorities found 19-year-old Colby Dean Nelson of Lenox deceased at the scene from a gunshot wound to the head.
Court records indicate Alan Schultz, 37, of Bedford, was near Nelson’s body and identified himself as the shooter to deputies.
Witnesses present also identified Schultz as the shooter, according to records.
Authorities reported Schultz and Nelson had a “disagreement” earlier inside the bar and another argument outside when Schultz was leaving.
The probable cause affidavit does not specify the nature of the argument.
McClatchy News contacted Bootleggers Bar and Grill on July 5 for comment but did not receive an immediate response.
According to deputies, Schultz drove home, retrieved a loaded handgun, returned to the bar, and shot Nelson in the face with one round before placing the gun on the ground and waiting for deputies to arrive.
Schultz was arrested on a charge of first-degree murder.
There is currently no available information regarding Schultz’s legal representation.
Clearfield is approximately a 95-mile drive southwest of Des Moines.
