Another person is facing charges for harboring a man who was arrested with many warrants out of Delaware and Maryland. Charged with misdemeanor impeding apprehension or prosecution, Hyla Shy Davis remains free and awaits a preliminary hearing on April 29th.
On March 7th, members of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office learned that somebody wanted in Delaware and Maryland may be living in the Waynesboro region. Brett Davis, according to the FCSO, was wanted on charges of theft of a motor vehicle, agreement to engage in felony criminal conduct, third-degree assault, disregarding a police officer signal, criminal mischief, disorderly conduct, CDS possession of marijuana 10 grams, and unlawful firearm transfer or possession. The FCSO suspected Davis was in an apartment on Norwood Avenue in Blue Ridge Summit.
When police arrived at about 11 a.m. on March 7th, they reported that no one was at the residence. A black vehicle pulled up while they were there, and they identified the driver as Hyla Davis. According to deputies, Davis agreed to a home search and said that Brett Davis was her cousin. However, she allegedly told the authorities that her cousin was not inside and that she had no idea where he was.
After conducting an initial investigation, deputies discovered debris in a bedroom closet, indicating that someone had moved the ceiling tiles to gain access to the attic. Deputies said Hyla Davis continued to deny that Brett was at the house and that “she had not seen Brett since she was 10 years old” when officers inquired about men’s clothes in her bedroom and Brett’s location.
Shortly after this exchange, deputies discovered Davis hiding in the attic of the property. FCSO reports that Hyla Davis immediately began crying after hearing this over the radio. Brett Davis later told police “that he and Hyla were dating and were ‘distant’ cousins.”
“If you’re a fugitive in Franklin County, know this—we will find you,” declared Franklin County Sheriff Benjamin H. Sites. “These types of operations are dangerous and complicated; however, deputies are dedicated to keeping this community safe and work tirelessly with any agency to bring criminals to justice.”
Hyla Davis is now free and awaiting a preliminary hearing on charges of obstructing apprehension.
