Authorities in Akron, Ohio, are reaching out to the public for assistance in identifying the individuals accountable for a tragic shooting incident. The incident occurred during a bustling street party in the early hours of Sunday, resulting in the unfortunate death of one man and injuries sustained by 24 others.
Akron Police Chief Brian Harding announced during a news conference on Sunday evening that a birthday celebration with approximately 200 attendees had to be dispersed by officers after it spilled onto the streets, leading to multiple complaints around 10 p.m. on Saturday. Despite the initial intervention, the party resumed shortly after being broken up. However, just after midnight, reports of gunshots in the same area on Kelly Avenue in southeast Akron were received at the police station.
The violent incident resembled a drive-by shooting, as some attendees retaliated by firing back, according to Harding. The authorities have yet to determine the number of shooters or weapons involved, but they have already seized two handguns and suspect that a rifle was also utilized.
According to Harding, the area was filled with discarded shell casings, with a majority of them being pistol-caliber rounds.
The authorities have not disclosed the identity of the individual who lost their life. However, they did confirm that the victim was a 27-year-old male. Additionally, two other individuals are currently in critical condition as a result of the incident. The injured parties vary in age, with the youngest being 19 and the oldest being 43. The majority of those affected are in their 30s.
According to authorities, they received numerous 911 calls reporting the shooting incident. Additionally, several victims were transported to hospitals by private vehicles. It is worth noting that law enforcement has been addressing numerous shooting incidents in the vicinity within the last few months.
The police are urging witnesses to come forward with any information regarding the incident, as there are currently no suspects in custody. According to Harding, up to 100 individuals may have witnessed the events unfold.
The community is being urged to share any information they may have about this tragic incident,” Harding emphasized. He added, “We are worried about the potential for revenge and are actively working to prevent it. We are relying on the community’s assistance.”
Mayor Shammas Malik, speaking at a news conference, expressed his determination to ensure that those responsible for the shooting, as well as anyone seeking revenge, will face justice. He also expressed his concern about the disturbing trend of resorting to violence as a way to settle disagreements.
Malik expressed grave concern over the escalating levels of violence in our community, as well as in communities all over the country. He emphasized the ease with which weapons are accessed and the alarming nonchalance with which some individuals employ them. Malik highlighted the distressing reality that what would have once been settled with a mere fistfight now frequently culminates in a tragic shooting incident. He stressed the urgent need to hold those responsible for perpetrating violence accountable for their actions.
