Maxwell Hawkins, 37, of Pennsylvania, faces charges after his wife, Nicole Vega, was discovered dead from a single gunshot wound to the head. Authorities said Hawkins left Vega’s body in a pool of blood for their three children to find. On Thursday, authorities arrested Hawkins for crimes unrelated to the homicide, including child endangerment and public drinking.
The unsettling situation came to light after police arrived at the Hawkins home about 11:20 p.m. According to PBS affiliate WVIA-TV, a neighbor, Michael Schwarz, had already removed the children from the residence before officers arrived. Schwarz claimed that Hawkins had contacted him earlier from a convenience store, saying he and Vega had argued and that she was “acting weird.” Hawkins expressed worry that Vega could harm herself.
Schwarz told police that he persuaded Hawkins to return home and be with Vega. Later, Hawkins called again, asserting that Vega had disappeared. This caused Schwarz to hurry to the house, remove the children, and dial 911.
Officers discovered Hawkins in the kitchen, clearly intoxicated and displaying “extremely erratic” behavior. Police reported him as babbling incoherently, making it difficult to comprehend his claims. When questioned about Vega’s location, Hawkins pointed upstairs. However, officers discovered Vega’s body outdoors, near the pool.
Hawkins said Vega had “cheated on him” when challenged about her death, according to investigators. Investigators have not yet charged Hawkins with murder despite these circumstances. On Friday, Hawkins received his arraignment and will make his appearance before Magisterial District Judge Sean Gallagher on January 14. Hawkins is still in Lackawanna County prison because he was unable to make bail.
Destinney, the couple’s aunt, is caring for their three daughters following their untimely demise. Vega’s family has set up a GoFundMe page to cover burial costs and offer financial support for the children. The campaign reads: “On Thursday, January 2nd, Nicole Vega suddenly died, leaving behind three beautiful girls.
We are seeking funds to help lay Nicole to rest in the respect she deserves, as well as aid with the children’s additional financial care.” As of Thursday, the fundraising had raised $2,556, with a $10,000 target. The family also thanked people who donated clothing, food, and helpful thoughts at this trying time. The inquiry continues as investigators try to piece together the events that led to Vega’s death.
