One Oklahoma shelter for animals is on the list for national grant

Oklahoma’s animal shelters have been struggling to receive much-needed support, but there is a glimmer of hope. Out of the 40 shelters spread across the United States, only one in Oklahoma was fortunate enough to receive a grant from two major players in the animal healthcare industry. While it is disheartening that only one shelter received this grant, there are still numerous ways in which we can all contribute to the well-being of Oklahoma’s shelter pets.

Stillwater Animal Shelter The Only Oklahoma Shelter To Receive Grant

The Zoetis 2024 Grant Program recently announced its list of winners, who will receive a generous donation of $2 million worth of pet products. These products, provided by Zoetis, are intended to support animal shelters in their efforts to care for animals awaiting adoption. This includes essential items such as flea, tick, and heartworm preventatives, ensuring the well-being of these animals until they find their forever homes.

The Humane Society of Stillwater stood out as the sole Oklahoma location on the comprehensive list. Adoptapet chose the grant recipients based on their exceptional efforts in the community to facilitate animal adoptions. It is no surprise that Stillwater’s location was acknowledged, considering their remarkable adoption rate of 41% in 2020.

It’s hard to believe that out of the 335 animal shelters and animal welfare organizations in Oklahoma, only one location made it onto this list. This clearly indicates that the communities in Oklahoma need to step up and provide more assistance.

For The Rest Of The Shelters, How Can You Help?

There are various ways for Oklahomans, regardless of their financial status, to contribute to animal shelters and assist in the care and adoption process of animals. Athena, a member of the local organization Fishy’s Friends Rescue, shared some options for getting involved in this noble cause.

“Whether you have extra funds to give or are looking for meaningful ways to help without spending a dime, there’s a way for everyone to support our mission of saving homeless dogs.”-Athena, Fishy’s Friends Rescue Founder

Remember, every little bit helps, and your support can make a world of difference for the animals in need.

Winter’s Coming and Shelters Need Donations, Not Just Funds

During the winter months, numerous shelters in Oklahoma face challenges in ensuring the warmth and comfort of pets. To alleviate this issue, there are a few essential items that can greatly contribute to the well-being of animals while they await adoption. Some of these items include:

Marcia Cronk from the Comanche County Pet Resource Foundation suggests organizing your own local fundraiser, such as a giving tree for pets in need. She proposes ideas like offering to foster a pet during the holidays through local rescue groups or sponsoring a holiday program for the homeless. There are plenty of ways to make a difference and give back this season.

If you or someone you know possesses these items, make sure to contact a local shelter in your community to make a donation. Additionally, take the opportunity to spend some time with the animals while dropping off the items. You never know who you might encounter during your visit.
