We are just over four weeks away from the start of the 2024 Summer Olympics, taking place this year in Paris.
Since the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, GA, the United States has dominated the overall medal count in every game, winning the most golds in all but one (2008, where host China took the lead).
This streak of excellence has propelled the U.S. to the highest number of gold medals in modern Olympics history: 2,635.
The U.S. aims to continue this legacy, with Ohio playing a significant role.
According to The Sports Geek, the Buckeye State has won 44 individual gold medals, ranking third among all states since the first modern Olympiad in 1896.
Ohio is also one of just four states to have won 40 or more individual gold medals.
Some of Ohio’s most decorated Olympians include gymnast Simone Biles (Columbus), swimmer Gary Hall Jr. (Cincinnati), and swimmer Charles Daniels (Dayton), who won the U.S.’s first-ever gold medal in swimming at the 1904 St. Louis games.
California leads with 127 gold medals, followed by New York (70), Ohio, and Illinois (44).
Texas (34) completes the top five.
In the tri-state area, Indiana has won 13 individual golds, while Kentucky has brought home just three.
