A dramatic rescue unfolded when an Oklahoma City police officer and a good Samaritan saved a man who had fallen asleep on a bridge railing and nearly rolled into the water below.

Officer William Reyes responded to reports on November 10 about an unidentified man lying on a bridge, according to an incident report obtained by USA TODAY. Upon arrival, Reyes found the man lying flat on the railing, arms partly crossed, gazing at the sky or possibly asleep.

As Reyes approached, he saw the man begin to lift his leg and roll over the edge. Acting quickly, the officer grabbed the man’s red sweatshirt just as he was about to fall.

Passerby Assists in the Rescue

A jogger passing by noticed the situation and stepped in to help. Together, the jogger and Officer Reyes pulled the man back over the railing to safety. Emergency responders were then called to the scene.

The man explained that he was in the city because his mother-in-law was undergoing surgery. While his wife was out completing DoorDash deliveries, he decided to rest by the bridge after exploring the area. Exhausted, he fell asleep on the railing.

He later told Reyes that when he woke up, he realized he was rolling off the edge and saw the water below. He expressed heartfelt gratitude to the officer for saving his life.
