Ajtzalam, an 18-year-old, faces grave legal consequences for reportedly leaving her newborn in a dumpster. She has been charged with the felony of abandoning a child without the intention to return. On July 21, 2024, Ajtzalam gave birth behind the food truck she worked at and then proceeded to place her newborn son in a garbage bag and throw him in a dumpster. Fortunately, a passerby heard the baby’s cries and was able to rescue him. The baby received urgent medical care at the hospital and is reported to be in stable condition. The events that unfolded were truly unsettling.
After reviewing surveillance footage, the police department was able to link the abandoned newborn to Ajtzalam. In a shocking turn of events, Ajtzalam admitted during interrogation that she had intentionally left the child, as she feared her boyfriend would leave her if he found out about the baby. Her confession has left many stunned and saddened by the tragic circumstances surrounding the infant’s abandonment.
During an emotionally charged court hearing, the case took a significant turn when Judge V. Nelson set Ajtzalam’s bail at $90,000. The judge highlighted the severity of the situation, emphasizing the extraordinary luck involved in finding the child alive, particularly given the harsh summer temperatures that could have resulted in a tragic outcome. “Pure luck” was cited as a factor in the child’s survival and given the danger posed to the child under such circumstances, the judge deemed it appropriate to set the bail at $90,000.

Authorities revealed that Ajtzalam confessed to disposing of her infant, along with the placenta and umbilical cord, in a trash bag to hide what she had done from her partner. This tragic incident underscores the urgent need for accessible mental health and support services for new mothers, particularly those who find themselves in vulnerable situations. Ajtzalam’s public defender emphasized her difficult background, characterized by hardships and a lack of support networks, which may have contributed to her devastating choice.
