More than 414,000 individuals had their information compromised in a data breach that affected the largest educators’ association in Texas and the United States.
This month, the Texas Attorney General’s Office received a data security breach report from the Association of Texas Professional Educators, notifying them of the breach.
The names, addresses, social security numbers, dates of birth, and driver’s license numbers of a few employees and members have been compromised.
According to a notice released by ATPE, the association’s members who shared their medical records with them may have had their confidential information compromised. Additionally, those who received payments from ATPE through ACH transactions may have had their financial account information compromised as well.
ATPE notified its users about the data breach on April 12, even though the official report was sent to the Texas and Maine attorney general offices in June.

On February 12, ATPE detected “suspicious activities” on its network. Following a forensic investigation that concluded on March 20, it was discovered that an unauthorized user had accessed some of ATPE’s systems.
There have been several notable data breaches this year, and ATPE is just one of the many organizations affected.
In April, Frontier Communications Parent, a Dallas-based telecommunications company that provides services to over 1.7 million residential and commercial customers in 25 states, discovered a data breach.
A class action lawsuit was filed against Frontier Communications due to a data breach that exposed the personal information of over 750,000 individuals, including 88,000 Texans.
