Missouri couple pauses in Montana during their 48-state walking journey

Torin and Paige Rouse, famously known as the “Walking America Couple”, recently entered Montana after completing a two-week-long walk from Greybull, Wyoming. Their goal is to spread a message of positivity throughout the United States by undertaking a journey to walk across all 48 states in the mainland.

Torin, speaking at a host’s home in Lavina, explained their strategy for covering all the states in four walking years. He mentioned that they have divided the states into five segments based on the season to ensure maximum coverage.

As they journeyed along the roads of Montana, from Bridger to Rockvale or from Laurel to Lavina, it was impossible to overlook the couple with their two push carts brimming with gear and their faithful dog, Jak.

Paige mentioned that they often camp in the public right of way near the road. Alternatively, they reach out to local churches or town halls and inquire about the possibility of camping in their yard.

In May 2022, the couple began a personal journey that has now become their most significant mission.

Torin expressed how they had anticipated that the challenging circumstances they faced would toughen them up and test their limits. However, as time passed, Torin realized that it was actually stripping away their cynicism and causing Paige to become more outgoing. They were overwhelmed by the kindness they experienced from others during this difficult time.

Paige expressed her surprise at the level of hospitality they received and the connections they made with people who were vastly different from them. “We didn’t anticipate such warm reception and the opportunity to interact with such diverse individuals,” she said.

The couple underwent a shift in perspective during the initial six months of their walk and were inspired to create social media content showcasing their experience to the world.

According to Torin, the message of “change the inside, change the outside” is a profound one that they aim to impart to people. Their goal is to demonstrate that it is possible to find contentment in nearly any situation if one knows how to properly train their thoughts.

The message has been conveyed to the residents of 21 states until now, and Montana is the most recent addition to the list.

Torin reflected on the challenges they faced during their summer journey, from the scorching heat in Kansas to the mosquito infestation in Wisconsin and the tornado in Kansas. He shared that these experiences serve as a reminder that their current situation isn’t so bad in comparison. “If you’re feeling frustrated by the sun beating down on you or the lack of running water, try to view it as an opportunity for personal growth,” advised Torin.

Montanans have embraced the couple and their message wholeheartedly, showing them warm hospitality and support.

Paige shared her thoughts on the warm welcome they have received in the less populated areas and how the towns are spread out. She expressed surprise at how much interaction they have had with the locals, with people stopping to greet them and offer assistance. “They ask us about our activities and if we need water. It’s been a really positive experience,” she said.

Completely funded by donations and the generosity of strangers, the couple’s voyage is a testament to the kindness of humanity.

According to Torin, they have a considerable number of followers, which has presented them with advertising and sponsorship opportunities. However, they have made a conscious decision to steer clear of these options and make a statement. Instead, they rely on donations from individuals who value their content. Torin emphasized that they produce a large amount of content, which is greatly appreciated by their supporters.

The couple’s journey can be tracked for free on various social media platforms, including  Facebook , Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube.

Before moving on to their next state, they have scheduled stops in Harlowton, White Sulpher Springs, Helena, and Missoula.

Torin shared their upcoming travel plans, stating that they will be embarking on a walking journey from Missoula, through the panhandle of Idaho, and continuing on to Spokane, Washington. They plan to cross most of Washington, drop down into Oregon, and merge onto the Coastal Highway to make their way down to California. Finally, they will be finishing off their adventure with visits to Nevada, Arizona, and Utah.

They are willing to wait for almost a year before they can travel back home for a break, but they believe it is a sacrifice worth making.

Paige expressed that simply embarking on an adventure would not be sufficient motivation, but the significance behind it makes it incredibly fulfilling. She believes that the challenge is worth the effort when it comes to making a positive impact on the lives of others.
