According to law enforcement sources, a brave commuter on an uptown 4 train was shot and injured on the Upper East Side early Sunday. The incident occurred when the straphanger attempted to intervene in a dispute between a couple.
According to The Post, the victim, a 31-year-old man, was struck in his left hand while on the train at East 86th Street and Lexington Avenue around 2:30 a.m. on Sunday, as reported by the police.
According to police sources, the suspect and his girlfriend were engaged in a heated argument on the train. It was during this altercation that the victim bravely stepped in to intervene. Unfortunately, the situation escalated rapidly, and the suspect resorted to using a firearm, firing a single shot.
The suspect swiftly left the scene after firing shots, and authorities have not yet apprehended or identified him.

According to Maylene Sanchez, a 33-year-old commuter, she had to rely on a $20 Uber ride to get into Manhattan on Sunday morning. The reason for this was because the subway was still experiencing delays following the shooting incident.
Sanchez, who is eight months pregnant and saving every penny for her baby, expressed her frustration over spending $20 on an Uber. “It’s a real bummer. It doesn’t seem fair that I had to shell out $20 just to open the store.”
Both workers expressed their frustration with the MTA for increasing subway fares while still having to deal with the chaotic conditions.

“This morning, five police officers came to purchase donuts, and we couldn’t help but wonder about their unexpected visit,” she expressed. “It would have been nice if they had given us some explanation or reason behind their presence.”
Both women expressed their surprise upon learning about the shooting incident as they frequently observed a significant police presence at the station.
A 21-year-old resident expressed concern about the lack of police presence in the station. “There should be more attention given to this issue,” they stated. Furthermore, they suggested that homeless individuals be removed from the trains, as paying almost three dollars for a train ride should warrant a certain level of comfort and safety.

Sanchez expressed her surprise and fear about the situation, stating, “It’s scary. We’re in the city. We’re not in the ghetto, so I’m surprised.”
It is not clear whether police officers were present in the station during the shooting incident. However, on Sunday morning, there were at least five NYPD officers stationed at the entrances of both North and South trains.
According to the MTA, the local train line is currently closed for scheduled maintenance.
EMS transported the victim to Cornell Hospital, where they were reported to be in stable condition.
The authorities have not yet disclosed his identity.
The investigation by the NYPD is still in progress.
