Man from Vegas apprehended for issuing threats to federal and state officials

A Las Vegas man has been indicted by a federal grand jury on 22 counts for threatening to assault and murder federal officials, including judges, and state employees located in Washington, D.C., New York, New Jersey, and Montana.

As per the court records, Spencer Gear, aged 32, was charged for making menacing phone calls and sending a threatening email with intentions to assault and murder eight federal officials and three state employees. These incidents took place between November 30, 2023, and July 7, 2024.

After being arrested, Gear appeared in court for the first time. He is facing charges of 10 counts of threatening a federal official and 12 counts of transmitting a communication containing a threat to injure. A jury trial has been scheduled for September 24th.

In the event that Gear is found guilty, he could be subjected to a maximum sentence of 10 years for every charge of threatening a federal official and 5 years for every count of transmitting a threat to cause harm.
