Kansas City apartment shooting results in suspect being charged with woman’s death

Suspect charged in shooting death of woman at Kansas City apartment

A 22-year-old man from Kansas City has been charged by Jackson County prosecutors for his alleged involvement in a shooting that resulted in the death of a 23-year-old woman.

On Thursday, charges were brought against Travon Marcel Oliver for second-degree murder, unlawful use of a weapon, and two counts of armed criminal action.

On June 26th, at around noon, a shooting was reported in the vicinity of E. Linwood Boulevard and Garfield Avenue.

According to court documents, Oliver initially claimed that the victim was shot by a group of men who entered the apartment. However, he later changed his statement.

According to court documents, Oliver and the victim had planned to spend some time together at the apartment. However, during their time together, the victim accused Oliver of being unfaithful, leading to a heated verbal argument between the two.

According to court documents, Oliver claimed that the victim had picked up his firearm from a table. He admitted to forcefully taking it back from her and retreating. As he was moving away from the victim, the firearm accidentally discharged while he was still holding it, resulting in the victim being hit in the head.

Behind the apartment building, a handgun, specifically a silver Ruger 9mm, was found concealed in the bushes.

Currently, Oliver is being detained in the Jackson County jail with a bond amounting to $150,000.

The court has set a bond review hearing for Monday, July 8th, at 1:30 p.m. During the hearing, the judge will review the existing bond and decide whether any changes need to be made.
