Another gold-medal blunder was made by JD Vance.
After the U.S. women’s gymnastics team won the Olympics on Tuesday, new comments from the Ohio senator and Republican vice presidential candidate surfaced that did not age well. This time, the comments centered on Simone Biles, the team’s star gymnast.
In 2021, before becoming a U.S. senator, Vance expressed a peculiar opinion regarding Biles’ choice to withdraw from the Tokyo Games due to “the twisties.” This condition can be perilous as it causes athletes to temporarily lose their spatial awareness while in the air.
During a discussion on Fox News’ “Outnumbered,” Vance expressed some sympathy towards Biles’ situation. However, he criticized the world’s reaction to her decision to withdraw from the Games, stating that it is a reflection of how soft society has become.
JD Vance has once again found himself in hot water due to a comment he made regarding Olympic athlete Simone Biles. The comment, which is now causing backlash for Vance, has become a source of controversy.
The author of “Hillbilly Elegy” started by saying that it’s understandable for Simone Biles to have felt immense pressure. However, what strikes him as odd is how the media has turned Biles’s decision to quit the Olympic team into a heroic act, which he believes is not accurate and more reflective of the media’s perspective than Biles’s actual experience.
Vance expressed his concern about our therapeutic society, stating that it is not ideal to applaud people for their weakest moments rather than their moments of strength and heroism.
He acknowledged the toughness of being an athlete at the highest level and pointed out that the typical reaction to Simone Biles’ withdrawal from the Olympics would be to express sympathy and disappointment. However, he expressed his concern over the media’s response, which he believes has turned the situation into a strange therapeutic moment. Instead of acknowledging the difficulty of the situation, the press has chosen to praise her decision, which he sees as problematic.
During the Paris Olympics, Simone Biles participated in the competition. However, in 2021, Vance attempted to justify why recognizing Biles’ choice to withdraw from the Tokyo Olympics indicated that our society was becoming weaker.
As time passed, it became evident that Vance’s remarks in 2021 did not improve.
On Tuesday, Biles achieved a historic feat by winning her eighth Olympic medal, thereby cementing her place as the most decorated gymnast in the history of Team USA.
