Home Repairs For Good, a Marion County-based organization, has a noble goal of providing assistance to senior citizens aged 62 and above, as well as people with disabilities, in order to enable them to remain in their own homes.
The nonprofit organization, operating as a general contractor, utilizes a team of in-house staff, workforce development trainees, volunteers, and subcontractors to provide top-notch repairs without any cost to the homeowner. With a 501c3 status, they are dedicated to serving the community and making a positive impact on people’s lives.
The individuals they provide their service to have an average monthly household income of slightly above $1,400.
In a recent interview with News 8’s Brittany Noble, Lisa Cole, the director of community and partner engagement at Home Repairs for Good, emphasized the organization’s commitment to ensuring homeowners can age in place with safety and dignity.
She explained that living on a limited income leaves no room for unexpected expenses such as repairing leaky gutters or faulty wiring in the house which can pose a threat to one’s safety.
According to Cole, the repairs are mostly carried out by volunteers, who dedicate their time and skills to fixing the issues. Only in situations where it is necessary, staff, subcontractors, and trainees are brought in to assist.
According to Cole, the organization heavily depends on volunteers to carry out their work, along with corporate and individual donations and grants. The organization also receives some local government grants to cover the costs of materials and supplies. Cole mentioned that it becomes necessary to bring in skilled labor on certain occasions, and this enables the organization to achieve its objectives effectively.
The Home Repairs for Good program provides essential home repairs, including plumbing, electrical fixes, and accessibility modifications. According to organizers, the program served over 440 households in Marion County last year, with the top zip codes being 46218, 46208, 46205, 46222, and 46226.
