Independence Powerball winner gets the shock of her life: “I thought it was just for $100.”

A recent Powerball winner in Independence, Missouri, discovered that even missing out on one number could earn them a significant prize, far surpassing the $100 mark.

On May 25th, the winning Powerball ticket was purchased at the Food and Fuel Expresso located on 4200 S. Lee’s Summit Road. The lucky winner was able to secure the winning ticket from this particular location.

The Powerball drawing had the winning combination of 6, 33, 35, 36, and 64, with the Powerball number being 24. One lucky player came extremely close to winning it big by matching all but one of the white balls. She believed that the near-miss was worth a $100 prize.

The winner, who chose to remain anonymous, shared their experience with the clerk, saying, “I don’t know how much you guys pay out. I think maybe up to $100?” To which the clerk responded, “This is more than $100!” The winner expressed their surprise at the amount, to say the least.

It’s interesting to note that the combination of numbers on her ticket won her a prize of $50,000. While it may not be the grand jackpot of $120 million, it’s still a significant win.

The winner chuckled and exclaimed, “I can’t believe it, I was only off by one number!”

In 2023, Jackson County players were fortunate enough to win more than $108.7 million in total prizes, as reported by the Missouri Lottery. The winnings have contributed a significant amount, $15.5 million, to the education programs in the county.
