According to a recent poll by the University of Texas-Austin Texas Politics Project (TPP), a majority of Hispanic Texans expressed their preference for the deportation of illegal border crossers. Additionally, the data from the poll revealed that more Hispanic Texans have also chosen to leave the Democratic Party in the recent election.
According to Jim Henson, the executive director of TPP, there was a noticeable shift in favor of Donald Trump among Latino voters. He referenced exit poll data from the Washington Post to support his claim, stating that Trump secured 55% of the Latino vote in Texas, while Ted Cruz trailed slightly behind with an impressive 50%.
According to Henson, Trump’s ability to garner support from Hispanic voters indicated a decline in their loyalty to the Democratic Party. It also reflected a shift in their stance on significant election issues such as the economy and immigration, as well as their perception of Trump and Biden.
According to the data, Trump secured the support of 55% of the Hispanic vote in Texas, while Vice President Kamala Harris received 45%. Moreover, Trump emerged victorious with 65% of the Hispanic male vote.
According to the data, the main concerns among Texas voters were immigration, with 91% mentioning it, and the economy, with 87% expressing concern. A significant majority, 76%, also believed that the national economy was “not so good/poor.”
According to a recent survey, an overwhelming majority of Texas voters, 92%, believe that illegal border crossers should be deported back to their home countries.
The TPP data reveals that a majority of respondents, accounting for 51%, expressed trust in Trump’s ability to handle the economy, in contrast to 40% who favored Harris.
In a recent TPP October poll, it was found that an equal percentage of Hispanic voters and white voters shared similar views on immigration. Specifically, 49% of both groups believed that the U.S. allows too many people to legally immigrate to the country. Additionally, 43% of both groups agreed that illegal border crossers who are currently residing in the United States should be deported immediately.
According to a poll conducted by TPP in June 2024, 50% of registered Republican voters believe that Texas is spending too little on border security. In contrast, 44% of Democrats believe that Texas is spending too much.
According to Henson, the election of Donald Trump has already had an impact, as both Governor Greg Abbott and Lt. Governor Dan Patrick are now indicating that the significant increases in spending on border security under Operation Lone Star can be reduced. This, coupled with Trump’s election, will give legislators the opportunity to decrease spending from the current budget allocation of approximately $6.5 billion for border security as reported by the Legislative Budget Board.
According to The Center Square, the Texas legislature has earmarked over $11.6 billion for border security initiatives, surpassing the budgets of several state fiscal years. This allocation represents the largest financial commitment to border security in the history of the state.
According to State Rep. Greg Bonnen, R-Friendswood, who serves as the chair of the House Appropriations Committee, the funding provided by Texas taxpayers for OLS surpasses the federal taxpayer money allocated for Texas border security operations during the Trump administration. He emphasized that while the four years of the Trump administration saw $1.6 billion allocated for border security in Texas, the state is now appropriating $11.6 billion for the same purpose under the Biden presidency.
According to exit data from the Washington Post, Cruz secured the support of 50% of the Hispanic vote in Texas, with 62% of Hispanic males voting in his favor. The key concerns for voters who chose Cruz were immigration, with 89% prioritizing it, and the economy, with 82% considering it crucial. A significant majority of Cruz supporters, accounting for 86%, believed that individuals who cross the border illegally should be promptly deported to their countries of origin.
In November, Trump and Cruz achieved a historic milestone by winning in Texas border counties. This victory marked a significant shift as the majority of these counties turned red for the first time in the state’s history. The Center Square reported that this outcome is particularly noteworthy considering that a large portion of south Texas residents and registered voters are of Hispanic descent.
