Detention officers at the Harris County Jail in Texas made a significant discovery on Tuesday morning. Acting on an anonymous tip, they confiscated a loaded handgun that had been cleverly concealed inside an inmate’s wheelchair. This incident highlights the vigilance and effectiveness of the jail staff in ensuring the safety and security of all individuals within the facility.
Tyrone Kennedy, a 53-year-old inmate, is now facing a new felony charge after authorities discovered a weapon inside the seat cushion of his personal wheelchair. Kennedy was using the wheelchair when he was arrested on October 23 for a felony parole revocation warrant.
Kennedy recovered the weapon without incident while being held in a general population cell at the 1200 Baker Street jail facility.
Kennedy faced murder charges in 1988 and was subsequently found guilty. According to TDCJ records, he received a 50-year sentence. Although it is uncertain when he was released on parole, records from Harris County indicate that he initially violated his parole in 2013.
The Harris County District Attorney’s Office is collaborating with investigators to officially file the new charge.
The jail has initiated an internal investigation to evaluate the policies and procedures in connection with the incident.
