Great-grandmother Makes Frantic 911 Call After 7-Year-Old Ohio Boy Fatally Shoots Himself While Playing With Gun

Amidst a chaotic scene, the great-grandmother of a 7-year-old Ohio boy who fatally shot himself while playing with a gun made a frantic call to 911. In the recording, she could be heard answering the dispatcher’s questions as best as she could.

According to reports, the Springfield Township police were called to the 9700 block of Arvin Avenue at around 2:18 p.m. after receiving a call about a boy who had been shot. The incident is being investigated as an accidental shooting. The Cincinnati Enquirer obtained a recording of the phone call through an open records request.

The distressed woman, whose identity remains unknown, could be heard exclaiming, “Oh, my baby. Look at my baby.” The dispatcher promptly asked her if she could administer CPR and instructed her to perform it on Justice Jenkins, a 7-year-old boy who was later identified.

As she placed the phone on speaker, she started relaying the details to the dispatcher. They inquired about how the child managed to get hold of the firearm and the specifics of the incident. However, she seemed oblivious and sought input from those present in the room. According to the outlet, she was struggling to recall the exact sequence of events.

During the call, the dispatcher inquired about the commotion of screaming children in the background. The caller then revealed that Justice had supposedly been handling a gun. “What was he thinking, having a handgun?” the caller questioned those present in the room, although it’s uncertain if anyone replied. The call came to an end when the emergency team arrived at the location.

The Enquirer reported that there is no clarity on the number of children and adults present in the house along with the child. As of now, the police haven’t released any bodycam footage or an incident report. However, The Enquirer has requested for both of them.

According to the publication, the Hamilton County coroner has officially determined that Justice died due to a gunshot wound. Despite the first responders’ attempts to save him, they had to declare him dead at the scene.

With a population of almost 36,000 people, Springfield Township is situated a mere 12 miles north of Cincinnati. The shooting incident took place on Arvin Avenue, which is a residential street located towards the southwestern part of the township.
