Gov. Greg Abbott made an announcement on Wednesday about grants worth over $500 million that will be allocated to various public safety programs across the state. These grants will be used to support victims of crime, enhance border security, strengthen law enforcement agencies, and combat human trafficking.
In a statement, Governor Abbott expressed his belief that these public safety grants are crucial for bolstering Texas agencies and organizations in their efforts to enhance border security, combat human trafficking, ensure justice for victims, and safeguard Texans from dangerous criminals and violence. He further emphasized that the $500 million in grant funding will contribute to the ongoing development of a safer Texas for everyone involved.
The Public Safety Office within the governor’s office distributes the funds through numerous individual grants. Various recipients benefit from these grants, including local police departments, nonprofit organizations dedicated to preventing crime, district attorney offices, and state agencies, among others.
Over $194.9 million of the funds will be allocated to a range of services aimed at assisting victims of crime and violence against women. More than 500 grant awards will be distributed to programs that cater to the needs of crime victims.
According to Abbott’s announcement, an additional $55.7 million will be allocated to projects supporting Operation Lone Star, the state’s initiative to strengthen the southern border. These funds will be used to enhance interagency border security operations and facilitate directed actions to deter and interdict criminal activity. This investment reflects the state’s commitment to maintaining a secure and protected border.
More than $56.5 million will be allocated to over 300 grants that prioritize anti-terrorism efforts. These grants will be used to support local, regional, and state agencies in their equipment procurement, training initiatives, and planning endeavors.
Several organizations that received grants will utilize the funds for various purposes. For instance, some will allocate the money to purchase body cameras for police officers, while others will use it to assist fire departments near the southern border by providing necessary equipment. Additionally, the grants will be used to finance mental health services for at-risk youth and enhance security measures for houses of worship.
Organizations can now apply for grants through the Public Safety Office’s online portal. These grants are funded by a combination of state and federal funds.
The governor’s office houses the Public Safety Office, which oversees the distribution of grants for public safety. It is important to note that the Public Safety Office is distinct from the Texas Department of Public Safety. The latter is responsible for enforcing laws across the state and is governed by a commission consisting of appointed members who are confirmed by the state Senate.
