A Georgia state lawmaker is denying allegations of driving under the influence after being involved in a collision with a bicyclist in the bike lane of an Atlanta street. According to state troopers, the incident occurred, but the lawmaker insists that he was not intoxicated at the time.
According to records from the Atlanta Municipal Court, Rep. Devan Seabaugh is facing a total of seven charges. These charges include driving under the influence of alcohol, driving under the influence of drugs, and failing to follow traffic control devices.
A Cobb County Republican was apprehended on Thursday evening in Atlanta’s Grant Park neighborhood by the NightHawks, a specialized unit of the Georgia State Patrol that focuses on apprehending individuals driving under the influence. While the state patrol has not provided specific information about the incident, Seabaugh confirmed that no significant injuries occurred as a result of the crash.
According to Seabaugh, the bike lane did not have proper signage indicating that it had recently been converted into a bike lane.
Seabaugh, a Republican, won a special election in the summer of 2021 to secure a seat in the Georgia House, according to a report by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Representing constituents in western Cobb County, as well as Marietta and Kennesaw in Atlanta’s northwest suburbs, Seabaugh has been serving diligently in his district.
Seabaugh will be going up against Democrat challenger Karl Gallegos in the upcoming general election on November 5th.
