A former track and field athlete has received a 20-year prison sentence for committing firearms offenses. These offenses include trying to shoot a victim on his front porch and confronting a tow truck driver with a firearm a week later.
On January 3, Judge David S. Leibowitz of the U.S. District Court sentenced 28-year-old Olivier Ricardy Alexandre to 240 months in prison. This sentence includes an upward variance of 105 months. Alexandre had already pleaded guilty to a two-count indictment, which accused him of possessing ammunition and a firearm as a convicted felon.
Alexandre is facing charges related to two violent incidents that occurred in Miami-Dade County. One of these incidents took place on March 13, 2023, shortly after he was sentenced to probation in Warren County, Kentucky for felony marijuana trafficking. In this particular incident, Alexandre shot at least 18 rounds of ammunition at a victim who was entering his home after work. The Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD) Forensic Services Division later discovered that the shell casings from this shooting were connected to three other incidents in Miami-Dade County, one of which occurred on October 9, 2022 and involved the same victim and firearm.
Just a week after the attack on March 13, Alexandre found himself in yet another altercation. On March 21, 2023, officers from the Plantation Police Department were getting ready to carry out a search warrant at Alexandre’s residence when he suddenly appeared and threatened a tow truck driver who was repossessing a vehicle. Alexandre was promptly apprehended after brandishing a handgun that had an extended drum magazine.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), the U.S. Postal Inspection Service (USPIS), and the Miami-Dade Police Department conducted the investigation into the case. They received assistance from the Plantation Police Department and the Broward Sheriff’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Hayden P. O’Byrne was responsible for prosecuting the case.
As part of the nationwide initiative called Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), this prosecution is aimed at reducing gun violence and other violent crimes.
