On Sunday night, five individuals were shot on the south side of Indianapolis.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department received a report of a disturbance and dispatched officers to the Laurelwood Apartments on Teakwood Drive around 8:15 p.m. While responding to the initial call, law enforcement received another report of a person being shot at the scene.
Upon arrival, law enforcement officials discovered five individuals with injuries that were typical of gunshot wounds. IMPD has confirmed that all five victims were subsequently taken to hospitals for medical treatment.
According to law enforcement, one of the individuals involved in the incident is currently in critical condition. The remaining four individuals are said to be in serious condition, as reported by the authorities.
According to IMPD, the shooting incident left five people injured, including a 17-year-old boy and four adults — three women and one man. A male victim is currently in critical condition, but it is unclear whether it is the 17-year-old boy or the man who sustained more severe injuries.
During their investigation, the police detained an individual, but it is currently unclear what role, if any, this person played in the incident.
IMPD reported that the reason behind the shooting was a dispute that originated at a basketball court nearby.
During a media briefing, IMPD Night Watch Captain John Arvin emphasized the close and tight-knit nature of the community. It’s saddening to see an incident like this occur due to a basketball disturbance. As the community has young children who are often playing outside on Sunday nights, it’s important to find alternative ways to calm any disturbances and ensure the safety of everyone in the area.
The shooting incident is still being investigated by IMPD’s aggravated assault detectives. However, the police do not think that it poses a continuous threat to the community.
At the time of writing this article, there is no further information regarding the disturbance that has been disclosed.
