A powerful storm is currently sweeping across the East Coast, bringing with it a mix of snow and ice. Residents in the Northeast are preparing for this wintry weather, which will be followed by an extended period of extremely cold temperatures.
A powerful storm has started overnight and is set to bring heavy snowfall to certain areas of the region on Monday, January 6th. Southern New Jersey and southern Pennsylvania are expected to see accumulations of up to 6 inches, while some parts of Maryland and Virginia may receive as much as a foot of snow. After the storm passes, the temperatures will continue to be dangerously cold for the rest of the week. On Monday, the temperature will reach the mid-20s, but due to the wind-chill factor, it will feel 10 degrees colder.
The National Weather Service predicts that temperatures will remain below freezing until Sunday, Jan. 12.
“Prolonged heating demand, frozen pipes, dangerously low AccuWeather RealFeel Temperatures, and power outages can all occur this week,” said AccuWeather Meteorologist Alex Duffus.
Temperatures are expected to be significantly lower than average for this time of year, with a forecasted range of 12 to 25 degrees below the normal temperature.
