A physician from Sandusky, Ohio has been ordered to pay $4.7 million for willfully prescribing opioids and other controlled substances to patients.
According to a recent release by the Department of Justice on August 2nd, Dr. Gregory Gerber was sentenced to three and a half years in prison and one year of house arrest for the unlawful dispensation of narcotics.
According to the Department of Justice, Dr. Gerber has been accused of prescribing various drugs, such as fentanyl, oxycodone, and oxymorphone, to his patients without valid medical reasons repeatedly. The alleged incidents took place from January 2010 to August 2018.
According to the complaint, Dr. Gerber was accused of prescribing fentanyl patches that led to the death of one patient due to an overdose. In addition, he allegedly received kickbacks amounting to $175,000 from Insys Therapeutics, a drug manufacturer, in exchange for prescribing Subsys, a potent opioid that contains fentanyl, in an illegal manner.
Dr. Gerber has been handed a permanent prohibition from prescribing opioids and other controlled substances. Moreover, he has been permanently barred from owning, managing, or controlling any practice that dispenses controlled substances.
