Federal court files lawsuit against Houston attorney Tony Buzbee for alleged client abuse

Houston attorney Tony Buzbee is facing legal action in Louisiana federal court. Two lawsuits have been filed against Buzbee and his law firm, alleging that they engaged in unethical accounting practices and unlawfully kept settlement funds for themselves.

Buzbee has categorically rejected the claims, dismissing them as baseless and intended to tarnish his reputation and undermine his firm’s involvement in representing alleged sexual assault victims in the ongoing civil litigation against Sean “Diddy” Combs. Buzbee asserts that the former clients were motivated by financial incentives to bring lawsuits against him, further revealing that one former client was offered a sum of $10,000 to initiate legal action against him.

In an email sent on Tuesday afternoon, Buzbee stated that they have already reported this behavior to the authorities. They anticipate that disciplinary measures will be taken against the lawyers and individuals implicated in this matter. Buzbee also emphasized that the investigators involved have been captured on tape, describing their actions as both reprehensible and against the law.

Last week, two lawsuits were filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana.

A former ship captain named Adam Guidry has accused Buzbee of taking advantage of him by not properly explaining the expenses related to his case. Guidry had hired the Buzbee law firm in 2020 after sustaining injuries on a dredging ship owned by Callan Marine. Although the case was eventually settled, Guidry’s lawsuit alleges that Buzbee’s law firm retained the majority of the $350,000 settlement, leaving Guidry with only $5,123.

In another legal case, Matthew Ray Thompson, a ship deckhand, alleges that Buzbee failed to provide him with the compensation he deserved under the Jones Act. The Jones Act is a law that offers a solution to seamen who suffer injuries while working on a vessel due to their employer’s negligence, as stated on the U.S. Department of Labor’s website.

In 2023, Buzbee’s law firm had represented Thompson in a lawsuit against Strategic Towing Services following his unfortunate injury in a barge collision in the Houston Ship Channel. Thompson’s lawsuit against Buzbee claimed that the law firm had deposited his checks into their operating account and provided funds to him and his wife through Venmo, treating them as high-interest loans.

According to Buzbee, both cases accuse the law firm of engaging in unethical accounting practices. However, he asserts that he possesses sworn statements from both clients, wherein they express their agreement and approval of the accounting methods used in their respective cases.

He further stated that he possesses affidavits and a recording that provide evidence of these clients being compensated to file these baseless lawsuits.

Months later, Buzbee made an announcement about representing numerous alleged sexual assault victims in their legal pursuits against rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs, who is currently facing federal charges for alleged sex trafficking. The case also implicates renowned rapper and entrepreneur Jay-Z, who has been accused of drugging and sexually assaulting a minor back in 2000.
